Tillemans’ work primarily consists of small-scale oil paintings on gessoed wooden board. The intimate size of each piece invites the viewer in. Each painting brings meaning to an otherwise mundane subject matter. Tall Grass for example, is a closely cropped painting of a grassy shore with the horizon in the distance. The plain is void of any figure, leaving the viewer alone in the space and allowing them to project themselves into the painting. These places have a familiar feeling without being a recognizably specific place, allowing for a personal conversation between painting and viewer.
